Background

July 2005 saw the publication by the Department of Health and the Welsh Assembly Government of Shaping the Future of Public Health: Promoting Health in the NHS.

The report set out to help define the roles and development needs of specialised health promotion staff working in Primary Care Trusts in England and in Local Public Health Teams in Wales and in local government.

Following discussions with the Department of Health and Welsh Assembly officials, four national public health bodies are now working together to take forward the Report's recommendations, working in partnership with other organisations.

  • The Royal Society of Health (RSH): Giving a voice to the workforce as its organisational home
  • Royal Society of Health and Institute of Health Promotion and education (IHPE): Advocacy for specialised health promotion and its workforce
  • The Faculty of Public Health (FPH): Professional standards, education and training
  • The UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists: Regulation of the workforce

The work of the collaboration is part-funded by the UK Departments of Health. The Society of Health Education and Promotion Specialists (SHEPS) and the Royal Institute of Public Health (RIPH) have been involved in the discussions. We also acknowledge the support of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), the National Public Health Service for Wales (NPHS Wales) and the United Kingdom Public Health Association (UKPHA).
